Bruno Zhu (b. 1991, Porto, Portugal) handles photographs in a comparable manner to the way that viewers currently manipulate images, especially on the Internet. Freely mixing erudite and popular references, in an attempt, in his words, "to mix brightness with vulgarity", the artist links contemporary artistic creation with the fluidity of the media. Zhu has a BA Hons degree in Fashion Design from Central St Martins in London and is currently attending the Masters degree in Fine Arts at the Sandberg Institute, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. His work has been displayed in solo exhibitions at Foam Museum for Photography in Amsterdam (2015), Jeanine Hofland, (2014) both in The Netherlands and Carlos / Ishikawa, London, United Kingdom (2013). Recent group shows include: Kunsthale Mainz, Germany, Moderna Museet Stockholm, Sweden and De Appel in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (all in 2015). At the moment Zhu is part of the group showFilter Bubble, LUMA/Westbau, Zurich, Switzerland, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Simon Castets. In November 2015, Zhu was the recipient of the NOVO BANCO Revelation’s Art Prize which includes a solo show at the Serralves Museum in Porto, Portugal running until the end of January 2016.
